Manchester City and Liverpool Football Club have been fighting it out for their lives for the last 4 years or so.
The roots of this modern-day rivalry go back to that bus attack initiated by Liverpool fans in the 2018 Champions League encounter at Anfield.
Liverpool won that tie by an aggregate scoreline of 5-1. The 100 points Manchester City could not handle Anfield on a Champions League night. Thus, becoming the impetus that gave this rivalry a start!
Come next season Man City do get their revenge by winning 2-1 against the reds in what was a must-win match trailing 7 points behind Liverpool.
Man City go on to win the Premier League by 1 point.
Next season Liverpool wins the PL for the first time ever, and their first league title for 30 years!
And just the last season, Pep goes on to seal his 3rd title in the last 4 years with Man City, proving once more his side is a cut above everybody else.
And so, coming to this Sunday’s match, which is to be played at the Etihad!
Manchester City is on 73 points, Liverpool finds itself on 72 points and after 30 match days the two sides just won’t give up. Only a single point differentiates these two sides and that has been the pattern for the last 4 years as well!
From the start of the 18-19 season till now, Manchester City has taken one more point (338) than Liverpool (337). That is the level of consistency, high quality and persistence we are talking about!
Ex-Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher tweeted,
“This @ManCity @LFC rivalry is the best we’ve ever had in English football!! We’ve never had the two best teams & managers in the world together fighting it out.”
Even the managers are full of praises for one another.
“Liverpool is the toughest opponent I have ever faced in my 12-13 years as a manager. Liverpool in the last few years have been outstanding.” – Pep Guardiola on Jürgen Klopp.
“Pep is the best coach in the world. … If anybody doubts him, I have no idea how that could happen.” – Jürgen Klopp on Pep Guardiola.
Now call this mind games or genuine admiration, the two managers always have had genuine respect for one another whenever they have spoken.
Coming back to the point Carragher made, he is absolutely right to point out that Man City and Liverpool are the two best teams in the world.
To put it into perspective, an entire treble could be decided just between these two.
This Sunday’s match will be as good as a title decider, then later, these two sides are destined to meet in the FA Cup semi-finals.
And to top that off, there is a possibility of these two meeting again in the Champions League finals if they make it that far!
Without a doubt, Manchester City and Liverpool are the two best teams in the world and they are fighting it out for the biggest prizes in European football!
So, this Sunday’s match promises to be a cracking contest and Man City will believe they can edge past Liverpool!
That is because Manchester City has lost to Liverpool only once in the last 10 years at the Etihad!
Liverpool on the other hand can also feel confident because all the pressure is going to be on Man City. Liverpool was 13 points behind at one stage, be it playing a couple of games less.
But the fact that they are in this position and challenging City for the title will give them immense confidence heading into this one!
Manchester City and Liverpool is a great modern-day rivalry that is unfolding right before our eyes. In all its glory and drama this clash promises to be a Premier League Classic, so make sure not to miss out on this one!
